چکیده

The technology-driven evolution of crop plants from producers of basic food and fiber materials to producers of a broader range of specific molecules involved in human health and well-being is well under way. It will mark the beginning of a fundamental change in agricultural practices and the farm economy. The relentless discovery of naturally produced molecules in plants and their direct involvement in health and disease prevention in humans, coupled with the latest advances in genetic engineering, promise the approaching dawn of a new era of manufacturing plants or “phyto-phactories.” These new manufacturing plants will be designed in a laboratory, individually sown, grown by the acre, and managed by highly skilled and quality-certified farmers or farmer-owned corporations. They will use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to “manufacture” specific molecules and offer the dream of a new type of agricultural economy—an economy based on dollars per gram, rather than dollars per bushel.

Phyto-Chemical and Morphological Characters of Calendula officinalis as Affected by Micronutrients

In order to study the effect of foliar applications of micronutrients on yield, extraction oil production and chemical composition of pot marigold (Calendula officinalis), two experiments were conducted in the randomized complete block design with three replications in Shahrekord, Iran during two growing seasons 2014 and 2015. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of foliar...

Tomato plants transformed with the inhibitor-of-virus-replication gene are partially resistant to Botrytis cinerea.

Tomato plants transformed with a cDNA clone encoding the inhibitor-of-virus-replication (IVR) gene were partially resistant to Botrytis cinerea. This resistance was observed as a significant reduction in the size of lesions induced by the fungus in transgenic plants compared with the lesions on the nontransgenic control plants. This resistance was weakened when plants were kept at an elevated t...

Bioaccumulation and phyto-translocation of Nickel by Medicago sativa in a calcareous soil of Iran

Abstract Nickel is a heavy metal distributed ubiquitously in nature. It accumulates in soil as a result of human activities, including mining and industries development. It may be poisonous to plants, humans, animals and microorganisms. The present study was implemented as a factorial experiment with a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), of three replications in calcareous soils of Karaj...

Polymerase chain reaction detection and phylogenetic characterization of an agent associated with yellow vine disease of cucurbits.

ABSTRACT Diagnosis of yellow vine disease (YVD) in cucurbits, an important disease in the south-central United States, relies on external symptom appearance, phloem discoloration, and the presence of bacterium-like organisms (BLOs) in phloem. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of BLO nucleotide sequences was explored as a means to improve diagnostic techniques. PCR, using a primer pa...

Genotyping Common Bean for the Potyvirus Resistance Alleles I and bc-1(2) with a Multiplex Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction Assay.

ABSTRACT A multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed to simultaneously genotype plants for the I and bc-1(2) alleles, which condition resistance in beans to Bean common mosaic virus and Bean common mosaic necrosis virus. A segregating F(2) population was derived from the cross between pinto bean breeding line P94207-189A (bc-1 bc-1 I I) and Olathe (bc-12 bc-1(2) i ...
